Microneedling for Stretch Marks: What to Realistically Expect
We probably get asked about microneedling for stretch marks more than any other treatment at our Oshawa clinic. And the conversation almost always starts the same way. Someone pulls out their phone, shows us a before-and-after photo they found on Instagram, and asks “can you do that?”
Sometimes yes. Sometimes kind of. It depends.
That’s not the answer people want but we’d rather be straight with you upfront than have you spend money expecting something we can’t deliver. Microneedling does improve stretch marks. But what “improve” actually looks like in person is different from what you’ll see in a curated photo gallery on a med spa’s website.
Why Creams Don’t Really Do Much
Quick background on what’s going on with stretch marks. When skin gets stretched too fast, pregnancy, rapid weight gain, growth spurts, the collagen and elastin fibres underneath tear. Like actually tearing. New ones look red or purple because there’s still inflammation. Old ones go silvery white once the scar tissue settles.
Your drugstore cream isn’t doing much because it sits on the epidermis and the damage is below it, in the dermis. Your skin’s outer layer is literally designed to block things from getting through. You might get softer skin around the marks but that’s about it.
How Microneedling Helps Fade Stretch Marks
This is where things get interesting and also where expectations need adjusting.
During a microneedling treatment in Oshawa, we run a pen device across the stretch mark area. It has fine needles that create tiny punctures in the skin. Sounds unpleasant, I know. But those micro-injuries are the whole point, your body registers them as wounds and starts pumping out collagen and elastin to repair the damage.
Over weeks and months, that fresh collagen fills in the damaged tissue. The stretch marks don’t disappear. Let me just say that now. What happens is they get softer, flatter, and the edges blur into the rest of your skin. Most clients say the texture change is what they notice most, running their hand over the area and it finally feels smooth instead of rigid.
Cleveland Clinic backs this up, they note that microneedling is commonly used for scarring and texture issues precisely because it triggers the body’s own collagen production.
What You Should Actually Expect From Results
Here’s where we lose some people but I think it’s the most important section on this page.
Red and purple stretch marks, newer ones, respond faster because there’s still collagen activity in that tissue. White marks take longer. We had one client with old marks on her hips, nothing visible until session four. Another woman with newer marks on her stomach saw changes by session two. Same treatment, completely different timelines.
A few things worth knowing:
- Expect three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, before you judge results
- Deeper or older marks may need additional rounds past six
- Your body needs that gap between sessions to actually build collagen, you can’t rush it by booking weekly
- The goal is marks that blend in, not marks that vanish
After a full series, microneedling for stretch marks usually brings things to a point where the marks stop grabbing your attention. The area just looks like regular skin instead of scarred skin. Most of our clients weren’t after perfection anyway. They just wanted to stop thinking about it every time they got dressed.
The Treatment and Recovery
People get nervous about the word “needling.” Fair enough. But it’s honestly not bad.
We numb the area about 20 minutes before we start. During treatment most people describe it as light scratching, one client compared it to a cat kneading, which is weird but honestly kind of tracks. Inner thighs and lower stomach are more sensitive. Arms and outer legs, barely anything.
You’ll look flushed afterward, like a sunburn without the sting. Clears up in a day or two. Recovery is simple:
- Skip retinol and active products for a few days
- Stay out of the sun, even 20 minutes unprotected can irritate treated skin
- Keep the area moisturized
- No hard gym sessions for a day or so
Some clients pair their sessions with hyperpigmentation treatment if uneven tone is a concern, or acne laser treatment for breakout scarring.
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that collagen-stimulating procedures like microneedling tend to outperform over-the-counter products for stretch marks, which tracks with what we see in practice.
So Is It Worth It?
For most people we treat? Yeah. It is.
The collagen your body produces is yours, not filler, not a product layered on. The improvement sticks because the skin itself is actually repaired. One session won’t do much though. This is a process. If you walk in understanding that microneedling for stretch marks is about visible improvement rather than total elimination, you’ll be happy with the results.
We’ve watched it happen hundreds of times at this point. It works. Just not the way Instagram makes it look.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does microneedling really work for stretch marks?
It does. The treatment triggers collagen production in the dermal layer where the damage sits. Won’t erase them completely, but over multiple sessions the texture and appearance improve a lot. Most of our clients are genuinely pleased with the difference.
2. How many microneedling sessions are needed for stretch marks?
Three to six typically, but it varies. Older or deeper marks might need extra sessions. We always assess the area in person first because guessing from photos doesn’t give you an accurate picture.
3. Is microneedling for stretch marks painful?
Nah, not really. Uncomfortable is how most people describe it. We numb the area beforehand and the sensation during treatment is basically light scratching. Certain body areas are more sensitive than others but everyone manages fine.
4. Is microneedling for stretch marks safe for all skin types?
Yes, generally, when it’s performed by someone trained and experienced. We do a consultation first to look at your skin and confirm the treatment makes sense for you specifically.
