Botox and Fillers

Irrespective of age and gender, the skin starts to lose its elasticity due to the decrease of collagen and hyaluronic acid as we age. Thanks to the advancement in the field of cosmetology, you do not have to surrender yourself to the pitfalls of age and skin problems.

Botox and fillers are two of the most common procedures at a medical spa to counteract aging skin. Treatment for Botox and dermal fillers are non-surgical and non-invasive procedures that have benefited many residents in the  Durham Region. Although these two can be used in conjunction with each other, they are not the same.

Let’s look at their differences below.

What is the difference between Botox and filler?

Botox, short for Botulinum Toxin, has been used as a non surgical cosmetic treatment for wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It works by temporarily paralyzing the underlying facial muscles, so they stop reacting to nerve impulses. It relaxes the muscles, and it prevents contractions for a specific time, hence reducing the appearance of frown lines and forehead lines.

Botox works well in eliminating expression lines and in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and is typically administered by manually injecting it into the affected area.

Fillers, on the other hand, are used to add volume. It is used in facial areas that need plumping up, such as the lips, cheeks, and jaws. It is also used to add volume onto the skin affected by scars. It helps in providing a youthful appearance to the face. Fillers are also administered by injecting the product into the desired area.

What are the types of Botox and fillers?

The most common types of Botox injections are:

  • Botox
  • Xeomin
  • Dysport
  • Myobloc

The most common types of filler injections are:

  • Juvederm or Restylane
  • Collagen
  • Poly-L-lactic or Sculptra
  • Radiance or radiesse

How long do Botox  and Filler results last?

Botox injections typically last from 3 to 4 months. With regular treatments, the appearance of wrinkle lines will have a less severe appearance as they become more relaxed.

Fillers have longer results ranging from half a year to a year, depending on the type of filler injected. However, when it is used together with Botox, the results last a lot longer.

Does the Botox Fillers procedure hurt?

Under normal circumstances, injecting Botox does not hurt. Other than a slight discomfort, it is not particularly painful. Filler injections do not cause significant pain. The practitioner will usually apply a topical cream to numb the area to be injected. Both the procedures are done with very fine needles. Provided the medical practitioner is an expert in his or field; they are both harmless procedures and does not require anesthesia.

What are the side effects of Botox and fillers?

There are no significant side effects of either Botox or fillers. However, as they are essentially medical procedures, minor side-effects can be expected. Side-effects of Botox can range from slight bruising to headaches and drooping of the eyelid. All of these side-effects are expected to subside within 24 hours. Drooping eyelids typically goes away within a week or so.Side effects of filler can range from redness, minor bruising, lumps, and slight bleeding during the procedure.

Are Botox Fillers Safe ?

Botox and fillers are both safe to be administered. However, individuals who have a history of neurological problems or are breastfeeding or pregnant should not undergo the procedure without thorough medical consultation.
